Save the Dates! Spring Events & Festivals

There is virtually something for everyone when it comes to festivals and events in the Pawleys Island area of South Carolina! Starting the new year made me think about some of my favorite upcoming events in Georgetown and Pawleys Island, so I thought you might like to save the dates for some of these. I’ll be posting more specifics about each one later, but here is some information you add to your calendar…

March 1, 2014 Winyah Bay Heritage Festival.

Sponsored by the Georgetown County Historical Society, this event celebrates Winyah Bay’s Rich History. In the early 1900’s, affluent northerners flocked to this area to hunt ducks, deer, quail and hogs, and also to fish with local sportsmen and landowners. This festival pays honor to that southern sporting heritage with hunting, fishing, sporting art, dogs, decoys and firearms. www.winyahbayfestival.org

March 28 & 29, 2014 67^th Annual Plantation Tours

The Plantation Tour features plantations and town houses in and around Georgetown that are privately owned and graciously shared with the Episcopal Church Women of Prince George, Winyah Parish, once per year. A different group of homes is on tour each day. Home baked goods, original framed art from local artists, books from the Georgetown Historical Society and the award-winning cookbook, Plantation Tours and Tastes, will be offered for sale. April 5, 2014 Long Bay Symphony Pops Orchestra – An Evening of Motown

“Get Ready” to feel the groove with the cool sounds of Motown presented by renowned tribute artists performing live with the Long bay Symphony Pops Orchestra. Relive the magic of the timeless, soulful sounds of the Temptations, the Supremes, the Four Tops and more, with theatrical panache and inspired arrangements. May 10, 2014 Pawleys Pavilion Reunion

The Tams are set to perform at this year’s Pawleys Pavilion Reunion! Memories of the popular Pawleys Pavilion are rekindled every May and new “memories” built. Whether or not you were fortunate enough to be a part of the “Party of Pawleys Island”, this is your chance. Pawleys Island Area Christmas Programs

Living in South Carolina’s Low country offers many opportunities and activities throughout the year, but ushering in the holidays with traditional song and celebration certainly ranks among the best. Here are a few of my favorites to get you started…

Dec. 5-7, 12-14, and 19-21: Nights of a Thousand Candles at Brookgreen Gardens … Over 5,500 hand-lit candles and sparkling lights adorn the gardens from 3-10pm. For ticket information, visit: www.brookgreen.org or call 843-235-6000.

Dec. 19: The BEACH Singers of Georgetown County School District will be joining The Elsie Blackwell Pollock Festival Choir performing Handel’s Messiah Thursday, December 19 at 7PM at Waccamaw High School. Free Admission!

Hunter Pace at Hobcaw Barony

On Saturday, November 23, 2013, the nature preserve next to DeBordieu, Hobcaw Barony, will host its 2^nd Annual Hunter Pace.

A hunter pace is a low-key competitive event derived from foxhunting. Riders follow an outdoor course laid out over terrain

which is meant to simulate the riding conditions encountered during a foxhunt. A fox hunter typically uses a mixture of gaits as a fox’s scent is found and followed by hounds through open country and along wooded trails. It is up to each team to guess what the organizers of the pace have decided is an ideal time to complete the course and to adjust their progress accordingly.

Riders providing their own horses can register for this program which includes the Hunter Pace and lunch. Registration forms for riders are available at the Hobcaw Barony Discovery Center just south of DeBordieu and Pawleys Island, or and must be completed and received by Friday, November 15th, 2013 in order to be officially registered and receive a start time. The Belle W. Baruch Foundation is a non-profit organization and owner of the 16,000-acre wildlife refuge, Hobcaw Barony. Made as a royal land grant in 1718, it was eventually subdivided into 14 individual plantations. It became the winter residence of Wall Street millionaire and presidential adviser Bernard Baruch. Mr. Baruch’s daughter, Belle, purchased all of the barony over a period of several years and at her death a foundation was created to use the land for the “purposes of teaching and/or research in forestry, marine biology, and the care and propagation of wildlife, flora and fauna in connection with colleges and/or universities in the state of South Carolina.” Visit the website at www.hobcawbarony.org.

Residents and visitors to DeBordieu and Pawleys Island, South Carolina are in for a treat just over the bridge in Georgetown on November 2^nd.

Taste of Georgetown will be held from 12:30 until 3:30pm with great food and shopping.

Over 20 restaurants and retail stores and others will have goods and goodies to offer.

Local artists will also display their work at Francis Marion Park and many retail stores will be having special promotions.

Taste of Georgetown will take place between Queen and Orange Streets in downtown Georgetown.

Music will be provided by The Fourclosures Band, The Highliners and The Hi Lo Duo.

Food sample tickets will be sold at three locations along Front Street.

The purpose of the event is to raise money for the Family Justice Center or Georgetown located at 1530 Highmarket Street. A great event for a great cause! For more information, visit www.tasteofgeorgetownsc.com.

Halloween Events in Georgetown, Pawleys Island & Murrells Inlet SC

Halloween at DeBordieu is always fun and this year promises to be one of the best ever! Folks at DeBordieu have their decorations out, and are ready to welcome Trick or Treaters Thursday night, October 31, 2013.

If Trick or Treating is not for you, here a few options in Pawleys Island, Georgetown and Murrells Inlet you might want to check out…

Halloween on the Marsh in Murrells Inlet: Beginning at 5PM on Halloween night, the Annual Trick or Treating and Costume Parade with a Costume Contests at 6PM for the scariest, funniest, and most creative costumes. At 7PM, adults can join in on the action with fright, fun, costumes and prizes. 843-357-2007 is the number to call for more information.

A Safe and Not So Spooky Halloween: Georgetown County Family YMCA and city of Georgetown will be sponsoring a safe and not so spooky Halloween on Oct. 31. At 4:30 p.m. there will be pumpkin painting and concessions and at 6:30 p.m. the Disney movie, “Hotel Transylvania,” will be shown at Rainey Park and Kaminski House lawn. Ghost tour: Walking Shadows Ghost Tours will be having a Halloween Ghost Tour for 14 years and younger at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31 and a tour for 15 years and up at 9 p.m. Meet at 800 Front St. (Joy filled Gifts and Yarn Shop) 843-543-5321.

GHOST TOURS: Ghost tours featuring some of the most “haunted” locations in the Georgetown area are being offered by Jamie Grooms and his paranormal research team named Chasen Abigail Cross. Tours are for adults and cost from $45 to $100. Call Grooms at 843-325-6905 for details.

Hallelujah Night: Beach Family Worship Center on Highmarket Street will be having its first “Hallelujah Night” Oct. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be free carnival games and candy, bake sales, and T-shirt sales. Call Pastor Eric Wilder at (843) 315-4880 for more information.
