BILL HAAS to golf and fish at DeBordieu!

PGA Tour 2011 Fedex Champion BILL HAAS will be participating in the 3^rd annual 2012 DeBordieu Celebrity Pro-Am for Cystic Fibrosis November 12-13, and the Inaugural CF4CF Fishing Tournament!!!!

Sponsored by Adams golf and TaylorMade Golf, proceeds from this event go to the South Carolina Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, to assure the development of the means to cure and control cystic fibrosis and to improve the quality of life for those with the disease.

This Texas Scramble event will consist of 30 teams comprised of four golfers along with a Touring Professional, Celebrity, or local PGA Club Professional. More details about the Fishing Tournament will be revealed at a later date.

Meet DeBordieu Club’s Amie Philo!

I love touring prospective DeBordieu buyers and club members around the DeBordieu amenities, including the magnificent Golf Clubhouse. But my favorite part of the clubhouse tour, and the one that has the biggest impact on my prospects, is when we step into the pro shop and get the Amie Philo greeting!

Instantly, the warm welcome puts my buyers at ease, and if the Mrs. plays golf, she is comforted by the fact that DeBordieu has a Lady Golf Professional.

Following in her father’s footsteps, Amie has been in the golf business her whole life, and has played golf for as long as she can remember. After attending Coastal Carolina University on a full golf scholarship, Amie worked at Maggie Valley Resort Golf & Country Club in Asheville, NC. Amie is DeBordieu’s 2nd Assistant Golf Professional as well as the Merchandiser/Buyer for the Club. She is working toward her PGA Class A status and has just one more level to complete this stage of her career. She recently passed her Player Ability Test in June which allows her to teach at DeBordieu Club! A schedule of Amie’s teaching times and clinics will be published soon.

“I will most likely have my PGA card by 2013, she said, “and am looking forward to carrying that title and honor. Many people have inspired me along the way, but the most encouragement and support I’ve received started when I took this job at DeBordieu. My boss Shawn Roper, PGA, has been my mentor since day one. He makes me believe in myself and makes me strive for greatness.”

I’m guessing there’s one in particular that really fits that bill… Amie actually met her husband at DeBordieu, as did I. “The reason DeBordieu is so important to me is because this place is molding me to be the best me I can be. I work with an unbelievable team of people who inspire me every day. I look forward to every new day and every new adventure.”

2012 DMGA Top Dog Champs

The DeBordieu Men’s Goff Association’s Top Dog Championship was played Saturday morning on a fantastic day, loaded with great fun and fellowship. With August weather in the mid-eighties most of the field hardly broke a sweat.

Congratulation to the Top Dog Gross Champion – James Cunnington who steady 73, besting the field by 3 shots. The Top Dog Net Champion was decided on the second playoff hole where Kent McGinley outlasted Mitch Roberts after they both posted net 69’s. Steve Milligan repeated as the 2012 Summer Match Play Champion outlasting Johnny Rowell in the finals. Milligan also snagged the Sand Bagger of the Year award given to the individual with the most dollars earned during regular DMGA play. Congratulations again to our winners!

Green Jackets for Darla and Condoleezza!

Wow! For the first time in its 80-year history, Augusta National Golf Club has female members.

No matter how you feel about former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina financier Darla Moore becoming the first women in to make a fashion statement in Augusta National green jackets, it’s truly an historic moment for women, and for the game of golf.

“These accomplished women share our passion for the game of golf and both are well known and respected by our membership,” Augusta National Chairman Billy Payne said in a statement. “It will be a proud moment when we present Condoleezza and Darla their green jackets when the club opens this fall. This is a significant and positive time in our club’s history and, on behalf of our membership, I wanted to take this opportunity to welcome them and all of our new members into the Augusta National family.”

Here at DeBordieu, the ocean front, private golf community just north of Charleston, SC, we’re no stranger to women on the golf course. In fact, the current President of DeBordieu Club is Mrs. Marty Moore Wickam, who, by the way, is doing an awesome job!

Kiawah’s Ocean Course & DeBordieu…. how do these two Dye designs compare?

With all eyes on Kiawah for this week’s PGA Championship Golf Tournament, I thought it might be fun to compare the Ocean Course with DeBordieu Club’s private course. Both are Pete Dye courses, and both are absolutely gorgeous. I invited DeBordieu’s Head Golf Professional, Shawn Roper, to make the comparison.

“Comparing the similarities of the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island SC and the DeBordieu Club in Georgetown SC is a relatively easy task. The Pete Dye (Kiawah) and the Pete & P.B. Dye (DeBordieu) designs share a number of similarities.

Both were designed in the mid to late eighties in coastal developments in South Carolina. The layouts are both links designs with elements like waste areas, pot bunkers, dune like hills and an abundance of water. Both layouts share wide forgiving fairways, small protected greens, and ever present winds that alter the playing environment on a day to day basis. One of the obvious visual similarities is the railroad ties and bulk heads that have become a staple in Dye’s championship venues.

Obviously, the Ocean Course was designed to be a test to the highest level of golfers, with the course stretching out over 7,800 yards and with its proximity to the ocean golfers are subject to more penalizing playing conditions. DeBordieu, more of a subtle test, still challenges most at over 7,200 yards from the Back Tees, while guiding you through and abundance of oaks, pines and ever present wildlife.”
