Blessing of the InletPawleys Island and DeBordieu residents have two great events coming up this weekend!

The 17th Annual “Blessing of the Inlet” is all set for May 4, 2013 at Belin Memorial United Methodist Church – overlooking the greening marsh in Murrells Inlet. Belin (pronounced “blane like plane”) was established in 1925 and named for Reverend James L. Belin, a Methodist minister and generous area benefactor.

More than eight decades later, the idea for the annual Blessing was conceived in a Sunday school class as a way to give back to the one of the South’s most beloved fishing communities. From the start, the Blessing was intended to deliver fun, food and fellowship, and they’ve accomplished that mission and more. Dozens of vendors will be on hand – many of which will be serving mouthwatering local fare. There will be fun for kids of all ages. Hours are 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.Lowcountry Shrimp Fest

A smidge south in another of the Carolinas’ quaint fishing villages, the 37th Annual Lowcountry Shrimp Festival and Blessing of the Fleet (presented by the Roper St. Francis Mt. Pleasant Hospital) is being held on the same day, May 4, at the McClellanville Boat Landing. No kidding, this beautiful little town feels like a plunge into the past. shrimp boats

They have a full day of entertainment planned for the whole family … live music from two bands, the work of area artists on display, a special area devoted to kids and plenty of good eatin’ to keep hunger at bay. Hours are 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. One hundred percent of proceeds benefit the Archibald Rutledge Academy and the new Cape Romain Environmental Education Charter School.

Invite a few friends and bring the family to either or both of these spring-has-sprung events. There is no admission or parking fee and fun will be had come rain or shine. Both events share the goal of acknowledging fine fellowship and the blessings our Lord continues to pour out on our communities.

Winyah Bay Heritage Festival

“Pluff Mud: Where life is slow and oysters grow.”

That’s this year’s slogan for the Winyah Bay Heritage Festival, this weekend, March 2nd and 3rd in Georgetown, South Carolina, just south of DeBordieu and Pawleys Island, and only an hour north of Charleston. Winyah Bay Heritage birds of Prey (Copy)

Now in its sixth year, the festival is designed to celebrate the rich history of the Winyah Bay area, with an emphasis on conservation, preservation, art, hunting, fishing, decoy carving and other unique traditions.

This year’s featured artist, Lee Arthur of McClellanville, has carved an Atlantic Sturgeon that will be auctioned. The Atlantic Sturgeon was harvested for years as they produce the best caviar, but due to over fishing, they can no longer be harvested for their prized black eggs. This large, prehistoric, alligator looking fish swims in Winyah Bay and is often seen jumping, creating a huge splash, not unlike a hooked tarpon.

The Palmetto Dock dogs are back to show the agility of dogs that are part of our extended family. The Department of Natural Resources is providing their fishing simulator to test your skills with a line and also their shooting range to see if your aim is what it used to be. Brad Jones has been keeping his snakes ready for his “Snakes in Our Own Backyard” lecture, sure to please kids and those grownups that just aren’t so sure. The Youth Calling Clinic and Contest will allow your boy or girl to prove their worthiness on their first duck hunt. If they aren’t quite ready, we have fish and dogs they will be happy to paint. Mr. John Tanner takes us on ”An Imaginary Turkey Hunt” and we will be treated to a lecture about the “Story of the Sturgeon” given by a DNR representative.  If you need one more event to grab your attention, the Center for the Birds of Prey will be on hand with live birds and will answer all of your avian questions.

All proceeds from ticket sales and sponsors benefit the Georgetown County Historical Society, which in turn supports the Georgetown County Museum, a 501 c3 entity.

Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Arts!

The Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art starts this week!

It is the mission of the festival to create and enhance cultural awareness and enrich the quality of life for residents and visitors by providing quality performances, programs, and educational opportunities in music and the arts.

The first event is the WEARABLE ART LUNCHEON, a festival fund raiser held at Tommy Bahama Restaurant at Market Commons, Thursday, September 27 from 11:00 – 1:30. The $30 luncheon  will  feature a strolling fashion show with hot new trends as well as wearable art and jewelry from local artists. You can shop for unique art, jewelry, hats, scarves and fabulous gifts in the silent auction. This event is a fundraiser for the Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Art.

50% of the net proceeds help fund the Kathy Bryan Metts Visual Arts Scholarship. Kathy, a former DeBordieu resident grew up in Burlington, NC and came to be one of the best known artists of the South Carolina lowcountry. She passed away in 2006 at the age of fifty-nine from cancer. The Kathryn Bryan Metts Scholarship for the Visual Arts will be awarded to a student from either Georgetown County, SC, or Alamance County, NC, beginning this year. We have so many talented youngsters in the Pawleys Island area….. I hope one of our kids win!
