One of the first ocean front lots ever purchased in DeBordieu Colony just hit the market at $2,000,000! And it’s worth every penny.
Jim and Sally Kitchens put a whole lot of thought into the buying process when they bought their first ocean front lot in DeBordieu Colony back in 1972. At that time, the roads weren’t even paved. Wallace Pate, the developer, and Fred Green, his right hand man, were selling DeBordieu Colony lots out of a little trailer near what is now the 24-hour-manned security gate.
The Kitchens were one of the first dozen people to purchase at DeBordieu Colony, and they feel like they got the “pick of the litter!” says Kitchens. “We chose an ocean front lot with the highest dune, no walkway on either side of the lot, and no parking. It was perfect!”
The Kitchens family ended up buying two other lots and built on all three of them.
Unfortunately, even though the dune was protected by a sea wall, the house on this perfect front flag lot lost its ground floor to Hurricane Hugo in 1989. When the Kitchens built back, they moved the house 35 ft landward, but before they did, they filled the lot with TONS of extra dirt. The lot was raised to 16 ft. above sea level!
Unfortunately for the Kitchens family, the house they built back on their perfect lot burned a few years ago. You can still see where the driveway was, and how high the lot elevation is, but all that is left of the house are some really great Kitchens family memories, and those of the hundreds of families who rented from the Kitchens for over 30 years.
Now it’s time for a new family to get the pick of the litter, and build their ocean front home where they can make all new memories for their family at DeBordieu Colony.
