Creek Night is one of DeBordieu’s longest-standing traditions, and one of the most delicious!

Oysters, flounder, and all kinds of delicious dishes prepared by DeBordieu residents will be enjoyed at the DeBordieu Beach Club Pavilion Thursday night, October 18 from 6-9. It’s a community association function Co-Chaired this year by DeBordieu residents Jane and Jim Cooper & Reenee and Bob Flowers.

Not only has Conde Nast Traveler named Charleston SC, (about an hour south of DeBordieu), the #1 tourist destination in the United States for the second year in a row…. but now they’ve said it’s the top travel city on the planet!!!!Charleston Photos
It just doesnt’ get any better than that!

Many folks who vacation and live in DeBordieu and the Pawleys Island area choose to do so because of our close proximity to the Holy City. From DeBordieu’s security gate, it takes about an hour to get to Mount Pleasant, and then about another 15 minutes to cross the Cooper River Bridge into the historic downtown Charleston area. It’s perfect for a day trip for shopping and site-seeing, or zipping down for dinner at one of the fantastic restaurants!

Congratulations Charleston! It’s great to be your neighbor!!!!

Motown comes to Pawleys!

Of all the great artists featured in the Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art, I think I am most excited about LEGENDS OF MOTOWN, starring HORIZON!

I’m also excited I have a ticket because it is SOLD OUT!

“Straight out of Detroit comes Horizon, authentic, energetic, precise, harmonic, witty, and well-choreographed.  Horizon, without a doubt, brings Motown back to our forebrain with class and poise.  Dressed in classic Motown style, Rick Ingram, Prentiss “Smoke” Jones, and Earl Vinson soon have the audience eating out of their hands, finger-snapping, moving, remembering, wanting to hear more of it all over again.  Horizon’s 3-piece accompaniment consisting of drums, guitar, and keyboard/bass synthesizer.

Horizon was spotted on The Tonight Show hosted by Jay Leno in a clip from the New York Auto Show, and was featured inBusiness Week Magazine, not to mention John Sally’s The Best Damn Sports Show Period, harmonizing a special Super Bowl greeting to Detroit.

Horizon has shared their stage with many legendaries such asThe Temptations  and The Four Tops.  Further, they opened forDavy Jones, the former lead singer of The Monkeys and world-class rock bands including the original and former artists from the world’s greatest bands: Randy Meisner of The Eagles; Denny Laine of Wings and The Moody Blues; Fergie Frederiksen ofToto; and Ron Wikso of Foreigner.

Horizon’s recent hit single, Swing Engine, was performed in St. Croix, where the record was Number One on the charts for months.  Swing Engine has a happy calypso/soul feeling to it and comes with its own dance.  Horizon has also enjoyed a great response to the video, which was seen on BET’s Caribbean Rhythms.

Knowing the importance of giving back a portion, Horizon has donated their talents to many worthy causes such as the The Jerry Lewis Telethon, The March of Dimes, The Children’s Miracle Network, The Michigan Cancer Foundation, and The Isaiah Thomas Foundation’s Celebrity Golf Classic.”

Fireworks Ensemble American Tapestry will perform tonight, Thursday, 10/11/12  at the new WHS Auditorium as a part of the Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art! Tickets are available at the door and are just $25!

An amplified chamber band with a repertoire that encompasses an extraordinary range of styles, including Frank Zappa’s instrumental rock, traditional Americana, classic cartoon music, ambient techno, and 20th-century orchestral scores (to name a few), Fireworks presents a contemporary American vision of chamber music.

With its virtuosic performances, Fireworks has led the charge to bring a fresh perspective to established audiences, and to create a thrilling experience for new generations of listeners beyond the concert hall. Fireworks defies convention with a jazz-like approach to repertoire that treats each piece as a canvas for a unique, personal interpretation.

Founded in 2000 by composer/bassist Brian Coughlin, Fireworks was one of New York City’s first indie-classical bands. Fireworks burst onto the music scene with Coughlin’s rock-inspired version of Stravinsky’s orchestral masterpiece, The Rite of Spring. Called “adventurous and ahead of the curve,” “classically-trained but musically fearless,” and “the bridge between the contemporary classical new music ensemble and the mainstream popular audience,” Fireworks quickly drew the attention of critics and a national audience.

 

The Baruchs of Hobcaw

As a part of the Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art, the Tara Theater at Litchfield Beach & Golf will present a movie this evening (Tuesday, Oct 2) all about the Baruchs of Hobcaw, the preserved estate right next door to DeBordieu.

According to the festival website, ” The Baruchs of Hobcaw is the epic story of an extraordinary family who left the state of South Carolina an enormous gift – Hobcaw Barony, a 17,500 acre nature preserve on the Waccamaw Neck near Georgetown. Bernard Mannes Baruch was one of the most famous and influential Americans of the first half of the 20th century. A South Carolina native, he purchased Hobcaw Barony as a winter home in 1905. He and his wife, Annie Griffen Baruch, had three children, but their oldest daughter, Belle, was Hobcaw’s greatest champion. Belle grew up spending winter vacations at Hobcaw and eventually bought the property from her father. At a time when environmentalism was a nascent concept, she created the Belle W. Baruch Foundation in her will, preserving Hobcaw for education, research and the people of South Carolina.”

Many people actually have chosen to build their homes adjacent to this wonderful nature preserve in the Colony Club Estates and Patewood South neighborhoods.
